 The Commentary on The Sacred Srimad Bhagavad Gita




Sloka 7

asmākaḿ tu viśiṣṭā ye
tān nibodha dvijottama
saḿjñārthaḿ tān bravīmi te
SYNONYMS
asmākam — our; tu — but; viśiṣṭāḥ — especially powerful; ye — who; tān — them; nibodha — just take note of, be informed; dvija-uttamaO best of the brāhmaṇas; nāyakāḥ — captains; mama — my; sainyasya — of the soldiers; saḿjñā-artham — for information; tān — them; bravīmiI am speaking; teto you.
TRANSLATION
But for your information, O best of the brāhmaṇas, let me tell you about the captains who are especially qualified to lead my military force.

Sloka 8
bhavān bhīṣmaś ca karṇca
kṛpaś ca samitiḿ-jayaḥ
aśvatthāmā vikarṇca
saumadattis tathaiva ca
SYNONYMS
bhavān — your good self; bhīṣmaḥ — Grandfather Bhīṣma; ca — also; karṇaḥKarṇa; ca — and; kṛpaḥKṛpa; ca — and; samitim-jayaḥ — always victorious in battle; aśvatthāmāAśvatthāmā; vikarṇaḥ — Vikarṇa; caas well as; saumadattiḥ — the son of Somadatta; tathāas well as; eva — certainly; ca — also.
TRANSLATION
There are personalities like you, Bhīṣma, Karṇa, Kṛpa, Aśvatthāmā, Vikarṇa and the son of Somadatta called Bhūriśravā, who are always victorious in battle.
PURPORT
Duryodhana mentions the exceptional heroes in the battle, all of whom are ever victorious. Vikarṇa is the brother of Duryodhana, Aśvatthāmā is the son of Droṇācārya, and Saumadatti, or Bhūriśravā, is the son of the King of the Bāhlīkas. Karṇa is the half brother of Arjuna, as he was born of Kuntī before her marriage with King Pāṇḍu. Kṛpācārya's twin sister married Droṇācārya.

Sloka 9

SYNONYMS
anye — others; ca — also; bahavaḥin great numbers; śūrāḥ — heroes; mat-arthe — for my sake; tyakta-jīvitāḥ — prepared to risk life; nānā — many; śastra — weapons; praharaṇāḥ — equipped with; sarve — all of them; yuddha-viśāradāḥ — experienced in military science.
TRANSLATION
There are many other heroes who are prepared to lay down their lives for my sake. All of them are well equipped with different kinds of weapons, and all are experienced in military science.
PURPORT
As far as the others are concerned — like Jayadratha, Kṛtavarmā and Śalya — all are determined to lay down their lives for Duryodhana's sake. In other words, it is already concluded that all of them would die in the Battle of Kurukṣetra for joining the party of the sinful Duryodhana. Duryodhana was, of course, confident of his victory on account of the above-mentioned combined strength of his friends.





अस्माकं तु विशिष्टा ये तान्निबोध द्विजोत्तम ।
नायका मम सैन्यस्य संज्ञार्थं तान्ब्रवीमि ते ॥१-७॥

भवान्भीष्मश्च कर्णश्च कृपश्च समितिंजयः ।
अश्वत्थामा विकर्णश्च सौमदत्तिस्तथैव च ॥१-८॥

अन्ये च बहवः शूरा मदर्थे त्यक्तजीविताः ।
नानाशस्त्रप्रहरणाः सर्वे युद्धविशारदाः ॥१-९॥

Duryodhana is informing his preceptor Dronacarya, reminding him for his information that he should also know and be fully aware of all the leaders and commanders of the Kaurava army.

Kesava Kasmiri's Commentary
It could be postulated that if Duryodhana truly believes that the army of the Pandavas is invincible then why is he so persistent to fight with them, rather he should make peace and agree to a truce. Even possessing a doubt in his mind Duryodhana dauntlessly states to the contrary. With the use of particle tu inferring contrariness he is affirming his superiority over the Pandava army due to the fact that Drona the instructor of the leaders of both armies in the art of archery and the master of the science of weaponry is in his army fighting against the Pandavas, so under his protection how can their be any question of their army being invincible. You may now hear about the excellence of our warriors, exalted in knowledge, valorous, who have our fullest confidence as they are fighting for us of their own free will. I shall name for you those excellent warriors so you will know who they are and so that you will understand our position. The word dvijottama meaning best of the twice born, Brahmans, this being stated indicates a concealed meaning implying that if Dronacaraya will not fight then he is merely a Brahman who is only interested in eating the fine food served at the palace of Duryodhana.

Sridhara Swami's Commentary
The most powerful commanders are being named now. Samjitinjayah means always victorious in battle. This applies to Drona and Bhishmadeva and all the warriors named herein. The son of Somadatta was known as Bhurishravas.

Brahma Vaisnava Sampradaya:


Madhvacarya's Commentary
Madhvacarya has no commentary so we present Baladeva Vidyabhusana's.
The names Duryodhana has mentioned are: Bhavah referring to Drona himself. Vikarna who is the younger brother of Duryodhana and Bhurisrava is the son of Somadatta. Samitinjayah means ever victorious and is applied to Bhishma, Karna, Kripa and Asvatthama, the seven maha-rathas mentioned.

Kumara Vaisnava Sampradaya:


Kesava Kasmiri's Commentary
Here Duryodhana by the word bhavan is qualifying Drona as well as three others while mentioning those who are powerful in his army. The adjective samitinjaya meaning always victorious in battle applies to these four being Drona, Bhisma, Karna and Krpa. Then he points out others who are almost as powerful as these four such as Asvatthana and others. Asvatthama is the son of Drona. Vikarna is the younger brother of Duryodhana, Bhurisrava is Saumadatti the son of Somadatta who was the son of Bahilika the cousin of Bhishma.

Duryodhana pushes his point further by stating that many other powerful heroes as well are all determined to lay down their lives for the attainment of his purpose and the achievement of his desire. They are all formidable in battle as well.

Madhvacarya's Commentary
Madhvacarya has no commentary so we present Baladeva Vidyabhusana's.
That is not all, there are innumerable warriors in great numbers in my army of their calibre. Bahavah meaning innumerable refers to Jayadratha, Krtavarma, Salya and countless others who have all pledged their very lives for his sake and due to their sincere affection for him, with their extraordinary strength and their unsurpassed skill in military science his victory is assured.

Kumara Vaisnava Sampradaya:


Kesava Kasmiri's Commentary
The question may be raised are these the only warriors on Duryodhanas side. In this verse that question is answered by the words anye meaning many others, others like Jayadratha and Salya and Krtavarma who are all ready to lay down their lives for him. If it were to be further questioned as to their capability, this would be verified by 2 descriptive adjectives nana- sastra-praharanah meaning they are equipped with various missles as their weapons and yuddha-visarada meaning they are expert in all forms of military science.

स्तोत्रम्‌

॥ हरिः ॐ ॥

उत्तरन्यासः

 


इन्द्रियाणि मनो बुद्धिः सत्त्वं तेजो बलं धृतिः।
वासुदेवात्मकान्याहुः क्षेत्रं क्षेत्रज्ञ एव च॥१६॥

सर्वागमानामाचारः प्रथमं परिकल्पते।
आचारप्रभवो धर्मो धर्मस्य प्रभुरच्युतः॥१७॥

ऋषयः पितरो देवा महाभूतानि धातवः।
जङ्गमाजङ्गमं चेदं जगन्नारायणोद्भवम्॥१८॥

योगो ज्ञानं तथा सांख्यं विद्याः शिल्पादि कर्म च।
वेदाः शास्त्राणि विज्ञानमेतत्सर्वं जनार्दनात्॥१९॥

एको विष्णुर्महद्भूतं पृथग्भूतान्यनेकशः।
त्रींल्लोकान्व्याप्य भूतात्मा भुङ्क्ते विश्वभुगव्ययः॥२०॥
